SATURN II is a performance/installation in Karl van Welden’s SATURN-series, focusing on themes such as distance, intimacy, infinity, control and power in relation to the contemporary landscape. The site-specific project SATURN II explores the shaping powers of the urban landscape (cityscape) and is developed parallel to SATURN I, an installation for a natural landscape.

A high building holds a circle of monolithically shaped observation points. A panoptical setup which offers a view on its wide surroundings. As a spectator you take place in each observational post individually, zooming in on details in an otherwise chaotic urban panorama. The lens guides your gaze to the intimacy of isolated figures in the distance. In an atmosphere of melancholy and vague menace they attempt to inscribe themselves in world and time through small gestures.

City, performers and spectators become participants in a game of creating and bridging distances. The urban landscape as a mediator between human-sized actions and cosmic dimensions. Visitors determine their own time; the performers keep on playing without interruption.

SATURN II is een performance/installatie in Karl Van Welden’s SATURN-reeks, die zich toespitst op thema’s als afstand, intimiteit, oneindigheid, controle en macht in relatie tot het hedendaagse landschap. Het in situ project SATURN II exploreert de beeldkracht van het urban landscape (cityscape) en is parallel ontwikkeld met SATURN I, een installatie voor natuurlandschap.

Op een hoog gebouw staat een cirkel van monolithisch ogende observatiepunten. Een panoptische opstelling die uitzicht biedt op de weidse omgeving. Als toeschouwer neem je individueel plaats in de observatieposten, die inzoomen op details in een voor de rest chaotisch ogend stadspanorama. De lens gidst je blik naar de intimiteit van geïsoleerde figuren in de verte. In een atmosfeer van melancholie en vage dreiging trachten ze zich via kleine handelingen in te schrijven in de wereld en de tijd.

Stad, performers en toeschouwer worden deelnemers in een spel van afstanden scheppen en overbruggen. Het stadslandschap als bemiddelaar tussen handelingen op mensenmaat en kosmische dimensies. De bezoeker bepaalt zijn eigen tijd, de performers spelen onafgebroken door.
